Hike Bike and Run – Privacy

Last changed: 12 October 2026

The short version

Hike Bike and Run has no account and no server of its own. Your recordings and routes are stored on your phone and your watch, and we never see them. To draw maps, find routes, search for places and show the weather, the app asks a few public services, and those requests necessarily say which area you are looking at. Nothing else leaves your devices unless you share it yourself.

What the app stores, and where

In the app's private storage on your phone, and on your watch if you use one:

Deleting a recording or route in the app deletes it from the device. Deleting the app deletes everything. Your phone's own backups may include these files if you have backups switched on; that is between you and Apple or Google.

Your location

Hike Bike and Run uses your location to show where you are, to record your track and to guide you along a route. With your permission it keeps doing so while the screen is off or another app is open, but only while a recording is running; Android then shows a notification for as long as it lasts. Your location is not sent to us. The parts that reach outside services are listed below.

The app also works out on the device, from your position and the date, when the sun sets; and it reads the battery level of your phone or watch to tell you whether it will last. Neither leaves the device.

Outside services the app talks to

  1. Map tiles. To draw the map, the app downloads map images from OpenStreetMap (OpenStreetMap Foundation, United Kingdom) or OpenTopoMap (Germany), depending on the map style you chose. Each request carries your IP address and the map square being shown, so the server can see roughly which area you are viewing.
  2. Routing and elevation. When you plan a route, the points you place on the map, which can include your current position, and the sport are sent to the public routing server of FOSSGIS e.V. (Germany), which returns the way and its elevation profile. When you open a route that has no elevation of its own, such as an imported one, its line is sent there for the elevation profile.
  3. Weather along a route. When you open a route, up to seven points along it (rounded to about 100 metres) are sent to Open-Meteo, run by OpenMeteo GmbH (Switzerland), which returns the forecast for those places.
  4. Place search. When you search, your search text and, to rank nearby places first, your position rounded to about one kilometre are sent to Photon, run by komoot GmbH (Germany).

These services receive no name, account, device identifier or recording from us. The app identifies itself to them only as "HikeBikeRun" with our support address, as their rules require. Their own privacy policies apply to what they log.

Phone and watch

When you send a route to your watch, or the watch hands a finished outing to your phone, the data goes from one of your devices to the other through Apple's WatchConnectivity or Google's Wear OS data layer. These are system services of Apple and Google; the data is not sent to us. On Wear OS, Google may relay it through its own servers when the two devices are not near each other.

Apple Health (Apple Watch only)

If you allow it, the Apple Watch app records each outing as a workout and saves it to Apple Health with its route and distance, and reads your heart rate to show it while you record. Health data stays in Apple Health under your control; Hike Bike and Run does not send it anywhere and does not use it for advertising. You can change these permissions at any time in the Health app.
